The aim with this image was to use detail in a coherent way with the point being to show a compressed energetic density of the place. East wall is a medium sized walled city with a market at its centre. Its architecture is a mix of European and Middle Eastern buildings, the wall being inspired by the fortified towns of northern Europe and the ww2 fortifications deployed by all sides. The dense labyrinth of streets and squares is taken from images of places such as Shibam, Jerusalem and the old historic centres of many other large Middle Eastern cities. No one place is dominant in its influence, it shows a melding of cultural traditions into a shared whole with a shared goal, safety and prosperity. East Wall was an early attempt at using and showing the method of using the built environment as a visual language, its deployment here a window on the relationships and consequences we may face in a low energy consuming future.
